DRIBBLING
Dribbling is a very important
part of your game. It helps you move with the ball, get clear to make a
pass, get clear to shoot, and to make a lay up. Without dribbling the game
of Basketball would become like the forbidden 'N' word..... netball.....
Somethings
to remember when dribbling
*Keep your head and eyes
up. The Great Gods of Basketball (who live underneath all basketball courts)
have given every basketballer in the world a special power called 'Peripheral
Vision" (per-if-er-al). This means that you can see out of the corner of
your eyes!! What a cool power to have! You will be able to see the basketball
out of the corner of your eyes AND see who is coming towards you!
*Another way to know where
the basketball is is to trust it. If you push it to the floor with your
finger tips it will always come back to your hands. If you slap it, it
will probably leave home.
* Have good court vision.
Good court vision is most probably the most important part of basketball.
It doesn't matter how good a shot you are, or how good a passer, if you
don't know where your team are you won't be able to get the ball to them,
or from them. And if you don't know where the opposition are, they can
sneak up on you and steal the ball... ALWAYS BE ON THE LOOKOUT!!
Somethings
to remember when passing
*Passing is the fastest
and most impressive way to move the ball down the court. Whenever you have
the ball look for a pass, and then, only if there is no one in a better
position than you to pass it to, decide if you want to shoot, or dribble.
*My team of under 12/girls
have a special secret pass - called "The Crystal Pass". Whenever they here
the top secret code word, they know that it means that the person throwing
in will do something very special. She will throw the ball as hard
as she can down court (towards our basket) and the rest of the Crystals
have to run to get it. This is only ever used from the base line and if
there is absolutely no-one free.
*There are many different
types of passes, and each one is perfect for different situations:-
i/ the chest pass is the
safest short pass to use when passing to a free player.
ii/ Bounce passes are great
for tricky little passes in between players, but make them fast and accurate
so the opposition doesn't have enough time to bend down and intercept.
iii/ Overhead passes are
really only for the tallest player on the court. They can easily be rejected
by players taller than you and players smaller than you can jump and knock
the ball from behind. The Great Gods of Basketball (The Greatest ofcourse
being Shane Heal) don't recommend these passes very often.
iv/ Shoulder passes are
excellent passes for getting that distance. Just be careful that your muscles
don't grow so big that you knock one of your own teammates heads of with
your pass!
v/ Cross- Over passes
are perfect for when you are in sticky messes and can't get past an oponent.
Remember to put your leg to the side you are passing to.
*A GOOD PASS IS A QUICK
PASS, BUT AN AWESOME PASS IS A QUICK, CATCHABLE PASS!*
Somethings
to remember when Shooting
*B.E.E.F (Balance, Elbows,
Eyes, Feet checklist) is the way to shoot, square up to the back board,
and then balance your whole body, make sure your elbows are in the right
positions (90 degrees), use your eyes (and don't forget your feet) to aim,
and then follow through.
*The power comes from your
legs. This is because the ex-Great Gods of Basketball are buried under
basketball courts and whenever they see someone shooting they pulse their
power into the floor boards, and this travels up your legs. So remember...
the power comes from your legs.
*When you have been awarded
Free Throws, follow these steps:-
1. Take your time and relax,
make sure you fill your belly with air before you shoot.
2. Put one foot infront
of the other, and have them pointing at the basket.
3. Keep your eye on the
basket, you wouldn't want any Gods moving it on you!
4. Remember that the power
comes from your legs!!
5. Do not EVER jump over
the line... the gods will punish you...
6. Follow the balls arc
with your hand, and be polite and wave to it as it journeys to the basket.
7. Rebound, and then protect
the ball.
*Always! Whenever anyone
on the court shoots, make a big effort to rebound!
* Never shoot without looking
where you are throwing the ball to, always aim for the black box on the
back board.
Somethings
to remember when Defending
*Defending is a bit like
dancing.... follow your partner constantly!
*Balance yourself or you
will fall over and look like a goof. keep your feet at a comfortable distance,
and hold your arms and hands out to the side. Not only will your hands
help to balance you, but they will also make the opposition feel afraid
that you can stop them.
*Never
let your feet touch when you are a gorilla. Being a gorilla is excellent
defence, but when you are sidestepping and your feet touch you might lose
your balance and fall... not a good look!
*You can stomp and Ra to
scare the other team, but if you do it too much or too loudly, or be rude
or annoy the referee, the Great Gods might wake up and give you a tech
foul. So be careful. Just play like a good sport and you'll be right.
*Double teaming is the best
way to stop big or really good players, but always make sure the whole
team knows what you are doing.
Somethings
to remember when there is a Jumpball
*Spread out evenly around
the circle, and make sure your feet are not on or over the line. When the
ref says "stand still", do that and make sure you are infront of your player,
but don't get tangled up!
*A jumpball in our circle
means 'Catch and Shoot', so if the ball is hit to you and you are in our
key, catch, square up, and shoot and rebound.
*If we look sure to win
a jump, drop one player back towards our key, then pass the ball down to
her for a fastbreak!
Somethings
to remember whenever you are on a basketball court
* Basketball is a fun game,
so whenever you play have a big happy smile!! =)
*Remember to talk to your
team. If a team doesn't talk, and let their players know what is going
on, they will all be running in circles and not getting anything done.
*There is no I in team.
Don't hog the ball, share it around and everyone will have fun.
*There is such a thing as
bad winners. Always (no matter what happened on the court) shake hands
with the other team. This is good sportsmanship and is the first step towards
being a Great Basketballer.
*The Triple Threat Position
is the position that should, over time ofcourse, become natural to you,
and get into it automatically. The Great Gods have gotten so used to it,
it is how they sleep!!!!!!
*Clap, cheer, give them
five, or pat your team mates on the back!
*Keep your balance, no matter
what you do!
INCASE
OF EMERGENCY!!
DON'T
PANIC! :- IF YOU GET STUCK IN A YUKKY SITUATION AND DON'T KNOW WHETHER
TO PASS DRIBBLE, SHOOT OR CRY, REMEMBER YOU ARE A PART OF A TEAM, AND THAT
TEAM STICKS TOGETHER. YOUR TEAM WILL ALWAYS BE THERE TO HELP YOU! CALL
HELP!!
IF YOU
ARE HURT:- WHICH HOPEFULLY WON'T HAPPEN TO ANYONE, SIT DOWN ON THE
COURT. THE REFEREE WILL STOP THE GAME AS SOON AS PLAY GETS TO WHERE YOU
ARE.
IF THE
OTHER TEAM HAS LONG NAILS:- OR JEWELLRY ETC, TELL EITHER THE REFEREE
OR YOUR COACH. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND YOU OR YOUR TEAM COULD BE HURT...
MAKE SURE YOU TELL SOMEONE.
JUST REMEMBER,
IT IS ONLY A GAME, AND IF YOUR TEAM CAN'T HELP YOU OUT OF STICKY PROBLEMS
ON THE COURT, THEN THE GREAT GODS OF BASKETBALL WILL ALWAYS COME
OUT TO HELP YOU!
